Year 3 and 4 Newsletter

Happy New Year!

We hope you have had a happy Christmas holiday, and are excited about the New Year and all it brings!

We have some fantastic work planned for between now and Easter.

Our Topic focus is:

Can you make the connection?

&

 Are we there yet?

Attached is a copy of our Topic diagram which shows how this will be taught across the subject areas.

All the Year 3/4 children will also have weekly lessons of Drama with Mrs Thornley, as well as swimming and German.

Numeracy, not shown on the diagram, is taught daily.

HOMEWORK

·        Your child will receive spellings on Mondays, which need to be completed by Friday. Numeracy homework will be sent out on a Friday to be returned a week later.

·        Topic homework might also be sent out over weekends or holidays.

·        Homework is discussed in class with the children, but if there is confusion or misunderstanding please ask the class teacher for assistance.

·        Your child will also bring home reading books from school, and reading five or ten minutes a day with them can make a real difference with their progress. School staff will hear your child read both as part of a group and individually, as appropriate.

·        Your child will bring home a yellow Reading Record for you to note when and what your child has been reading at home. This does not just have to be books from school – you might read books from home, the library or even magazines!

PE

·        Although we have a set PE session on Tuesday, it is useful for the children to have their PE kits in school every day in case of timetable changes – please ensure it is in school every Monday and then taken home each weekend for washing.

·        PE kit should include: a white T-shirt, dark shorts (and track suit bottoms when it gets colder), and well-fitting plimsolls or trainers. These should be different from the clothes and shoes worn for the school day. Please ensure they are named, as the children occasionally get things mixed up with each other! For health and safety reasons, children who are not wearing appropriate clothing cannot take part in PE activities, and will miss this important part of the curriculum.

·        Children with earrings should not wear them for PE lessons, and will need to be able to take them out themselves. If they have had their ears pierced recently they will need to be provided with tape to put on them themselves, until the earrings can be removed. We cannot provide tape or plasters at school.

·        As a Healthy School we feel PE is an important part of our school curriculum and would like all children to enjoy our PE lessons and be able to take part. Children who are not able to do a PE lesson must bring a letter from home excusing them. Children who are not able to participate in the lesson will remain with their class and be involved appropriately. This might include acting as referees or observers, and taking part in evaluations and discussions.

·        May we also take this opportunity to remind you that we encourage the children to bring named water-bottles to be kept in the classroom. This is particularly useful after PE lessons and playtimes.

UNIFORM REMINDER

Due to Health and Safety concerns, we would like to remind you that it is not appropriate for children to be wearing jewellery in school. A watch and small stud earrings or small sleepers are acceptable, but please no rings, necklaces or bracelets. Please can you also ensure that your child is wearing suitable footwear in school. This should be black shoes, preferably not trainers or with heels.

If you are new to Team 2, we hope that this has given you any useful information you need, but please feel able to talk to your child’s class teacher about anything else.

We look forward to working alongside you this term, and to seeing the progress your child makes.

Mrs Richardson (Team Leader),

Miss McPherson, Mr Robson and Mrs MacCormack
