Code of Conduct

The staff and governors have agreed a Behaviour Policy, which aims to build up the communal life of the school, encouraging self-discipline and a sense of responsibility.  The emphasis is on encouraging; re-enforcing and rewarding good behaviour but sanctions are used when bad behaviour is serious, dangerous or persistent.

Children are made aware of rules concerning their behaviour when moving about the building or using the playground and each class teacher agrees a code of conduct with the children for the smooth running of daily life within the class.  Rewards and sanctions appropriate to the age of the child are agreed and reviewed by each team of teachers.  Parents and carers are informed of our rules in the Home-School Agreement.

It is our aim to treat children justly and incidents of bad behaviour such as bullying are fully investigated and, wherever possible, the causes of disputes are sorted out to the satisfaction of both sides.

We have a staged approach to sanctions; if a child is behaving in a way, which is unacceptable and is breaching the class/school rules or Home-School Agreement, a clear procedure is followed by staff. This is clearly outlined in our Behaviour Policy.

Copies of the Behaviour Policy are available from the School Office for any parents and carers who wish to read the full document.  Please let us know of any problems or worries you have about your child’s behaviour or other children’s treatment of him/her sooner rather than later as it is then much easier to sort them out.

School Meals

Cooked meals or a sandwich meal are available for children who are entitled to a free school meal. We are currently trialling and extension of this provision to all reception children.  If this trial is successful we intend to gradually introduce hot dinners to all children.   Application forms for free meals can be obtained from the school secretary.  They are sent to the Director of Education who informs the school if free meals have been granted.

Children who stay for dinner bring their own sandwiches and drink - no fizzy drinks, glass bottles or cans please ‑ and are supervised during the midday break by our midday supervisory assistants.  A senior member of the teaching staff is on the premises throughout the lunch break.  Parents who wish to purchase a daily packed meal through school should enquire at the office.

Clothing

There is a voluntary school uniform, most items are available to buy from the school office, please ask for a price list and order form. All children are expected to dress appropriately for school (e g jeans, track suits, shell suits or highly coloured shorts would not be considered appropriate).  Some of the time children will be taking part in handling paint, clay and other "messy" substances so an overall ‑ perhaps an old shirt ‑ would be advisable.  A pair of plimsolls, dark shorts, white T-shirt ‑ a leotard for girls if you wish ‑ are needed for PE in a suitable PE bag with a drawstring.  All clothing should be clearly marked with the child's name.

Absences

If your child is absent from school please inform the school by telephone before 9.30 on the first day of absence.  For all absences please send a letter on your child's return explaining the reasons.

We are committed to reducing absence as we recognise the link between pupil achievement and good levels of attendance. This year we have introduced the Traffic Light attendance scheme.  With the support of the Education Welfare Service we monitor each child’s attendance and if attendance falls below 90% in a term, we offer support and set a target for improvement.

Parents and carers are encouraged to take family holidays outside term time, however, if this is impossible, a holiday form should be obtained from the school secretary. This should be filled in and submitted before the holiday.  Unless there are exceptional circumstances this should not exceed 2 weeks in any year.

Medical Services

The school medical service offers a number of services.  Sight, hearing and dental checks no longer take place regularly for all children in school, an appointment can be made to see the School Nurse either in school or at the clinic.  Referral to the speech therapy service can also be arranged.

Occasionally children may catch head-lice.  This is nothing to be alarmed about as they apparently prefer clean heads!  It is important, however, that all parents check their children's hair regularly and comb through with a fine-toothed comb.  If you find anything, follow the code which is available from your doctor or the school health service.

When your child is on medication it would be sensible, as a rule, to keep him/her at home.  If your doctor feels that it is in order for him/her to return, we can only administer medicines prescribed by a doctor and clearly labelled; written parental permission for the medicine to be administered should also be given.  Such medicines should be given to the head teacher, school office, or class teacher by a responsible adult and NEVER sent with the child.  Parents of children with ongoing conditions such as asthma or diabetes should see the head teacher about arrangements for medication.

Kids’ Club- Holiday Club-Breakfast Club

We are the only school in the area able to offer high quality Ofsted inspected child care before and after school and during holiday times.  In fact we only close for the Christmas holiday!

Children can come to school at 8.15am for breakfast and fun activities before school starts.  Children are taken directly to their classrooms at 8.45am.

The Kids’ Club operates after school from 3.30 till 5.30pm on school days and on most days in the school holidays from 9.00 – 5.30pm.  Please ask the Club Leader Mrs J Smith for further details or enquire at the school office

Personal Accident Insurance for Pupils

The insurance market offers personal accident cover for pupils 24 hours a day.  Parents may not be aware of this, and if they wish to avail themselves of this cover for their children, they should make enquiries with insurance brokers or companies accordingly.

Personal Property on School Premises

Pupils are responsible for the security of their personal possessions.  All items of clothing should be clearly marked with the child’s name.

Admissions Policy

The school is attended by children from 4+ to 11+.  Children are admitted in the September after their fourth birthday.

All children will be considered for entry on an equal basis but, in order to keep the school roll down to the numbers for which accommodation is available, it is necessary to have an annual admission limit and a policy of priorities.

In accordance with the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs, the allocation of school places for pupils with a Statement of Special Educational Needs will take place before schools allocate other places as part of the annual admissions process.

The current Planned Admission Number is 45.  In the event of over-subscription the following criteria will apply in the order stated.  Words marked with a number e.g. 1 2 3 are explained separately at the end.

1.      Children who are looked after by a local authority.

2.      Children whose parents are on the electoral roll of All Saints Parish Church

            Gainsborough; this means regular worshippers and SHOULD NOT be

            confused with the civil electoral roll.  A letter from the Team Rector will be

            required.

3.      Children who have siblings1 already attending the school;

4.      Convenience of access to the school including:

i)                    the distance2 of the applicant's place of residence3 from the school;

ii)                  the extent to which, if not admitted, there is an alternative school, which is

            similarly accessible;

iii)                the nature of the route from the applicant's residence to the school;

iv)                the availability of transport

1.      Others.

There will be an admissions panel of two governors, the head teacher, health visitor/school nurse and social worker (if appropriate).  The panel will meet annually to review the availability of places. For children who will be five in the next academic year there will be a closing date of 19 December and places will be allocated at a meeting in the first week of March.

No applications for places will be accepted before the child's 3rd birthday. The entry form contains a category “Reasons why you would like your child to be admitted to this school”.

During the term before children are admitted there will be a meeting for parents and opportunities for the children to make familiarisation visits to the school with a parent.

Explanations and definitions:

1. Sibling:

·        A full brother or full sister, whether or not resident in the same household.

·        Another child normally resident for the majority of term time in the same household, for whom an adult in the household has parental responsibility as defined in the Children Act 1989.

·        In the case of twins (or two siblings in the same age cohort) and where there is only one place available in the school, both will be considered together as one application.  The school will be authorised to exceed its Admission Number by one, except if this breaches infant class size regulations.  In this case, parents will be given the choice, either to accept the one place available and a place in a different school for the other twin (or sibling) or to accept places in the nearest school with two places.  In the latter instance, the County Council may provide free transport for both children, provided the distance from home to school qualifies.

2.  Distance from home to school

1.      Where the distance is less than 2 miles, the measurement of the shortest route by maintained public highway and established public footpaths from the front gate of the house to the nearest approved entrance to the school.

2.      Where the distance is greater than 2 miles, the measurement of the shortest route by maintained public highway from the front gate of the house to the nearest approved entrance to the school.

Note:

The “front gate” of the house is taken to be the nearest point where the path, drive or track from the front door meets the public highway, including an unadopted road.

3.  Home address (“place of residence”)

This is the address where the child lives for the majority of the school term time with a parent who has parental responsibility as defined in the Children Act 1989 and a parent includes a person who is not a parent but who has responsibility for her/him. This could include a pupil’s guardians but will not usually include other relatives such

as grandparents, aunts, uncles etc unless they have all the rights, duties, powers and responsibilities and authority, which by law a parent of a child has in relation to the child and her/his property.

Where a child lives normally and habitually during the school week with more than one parent at different addresses, the home address for the purposes of school admissions will be that of the parent who lives closest, as the crow flies, to the school in question.

Equally, where a family possesses more than one home, the Governors will take as the home address (place of residence) the address where the family and child habitually and normally live for the majority of the school term time.

The Governors have the right to investigate any concerns it may have with respect to the accuracy of information provided by parents on an application form and to withdraw the offer of a school place if there is evidence that parents have made fraudulent claims e.g. concerning parental responsibility or place of residence.

If a place at the school is refused, parents have the right to appeal to an independent panel against the decision.  Details of the procedure are available from the school.

Policy on Charging for Educational Activities

The Governors accept the following provisions of the Education Reform Act 1988:‑

·        that all children have the right to free school education;

·        that activities offered wholly or mainly during normal teaching time should be available to all pupils regardless of their parents' ability or willingness to help meet the costs;

·        that the school should have the discretion to charge for optional activities provided wholly, or mainly outside school hours;

·        that the school has the right to invite voluntary contributions for the benefit of the school, or in support of any activity organised by the school, whether during or outside school hours.

Details of the school's policy agreed by the Governors is as follows:

1.      Individual instrumental musical tuition ‑ a charge will be made.

2.      Swimming lessons ‑ Parents will be asked to make a voluntary contribution to cover part of the cost of pool charges, except where families receive family credit or income support.

3.      Educational visits connected with work done in the class ‑ Parents may be asked to make voluntary contributions towards the cost, except where families receive family credit or income support.  No child will be excluded from the visit through inability to pay.

4.      Residential visits ‑ Parents will be asked to make voluntary contributions to cover the cost of transport and entry fees.  Parents will be expected to pay the cost of accommodation and food, except where families receive family credit or income support.  No child who wishes to go will be excluded from visits through inability to pay the additional costs but visits can only take place if the school fund is capable of contributing any necessary subsidy.
